I think bonding time is really the key to how fast your doll collection grows. So it is different for everyone. And, knowing from personal experience, once you bond with a doll, you want to buy oodles of stuff for her! So finances are a big consideration, too. For me, I only have two dolls (so far), but I think getting no more than one a year would be a good balance, based on finances and bonding time.

In 2004, I bought 3 dolls. I hadn't had any dolls in soooo long, I only had Samantha. My dad bought me Nellie when she came out, and he also got me Felicity for Christmas. Then, 2 days after Christmas, he had gotten an email from AG telling about Marisol. He knew I had to have her! In 2005, I had gotten a gift certificate for AG for my bday and I bought Elizabeth with that. Now I am waiting on my 6th doll, AGT#25. So that will be 2 this year. I won't get any more...
I'm trying to set my limits, too. It's really hard...I might even have to sneak Jess in if I really like her.

Five years ago I was given a Molly at Christmas. I sewed AG clothes all the previous year for my Granddaughters dolls that they received for Christmas. One of my grown daughters thought I should have an AG that looked like me. I was born in the forties also. I fell in love with Molly.
2 yrs ago I began sewing and selling on ebay. I bought myself a Felicity to use as a model. I fell in love again. Then I got acquainted with Cherry and was bitten by the AG bug. The last year and a half my kids have gifted me with many dolls and almost everything that AG has for sale. I have to pinch myself sometimes to be certain I'm not dreaming. I'm somewhat embaressed to tell you how many AG's I have now. OK are you sitting down? Yes, I know you are, as you are at the computer. LOL I have 29 AG dolls now, and yes, I need one more. ROTFL AG 25 wants to join this family. I may get to go to AGPC during the Christmas holidays with one of my DD's and GD. If this trip works comes off, I would like to pick her out.

I'm a bad influence, too. Because my mom and I love all kinds of dolls, we always get "new" or "like new" dolls for our collection. A Tolly girl and a Harry Potter doll came home today!
As for American Girl...
1992: My very first Our New Baby for Xmas
1996: Molly came to me
2000: Kit came to me
2002: Lindsey came to me, also adopted my friend's AGT 7, Ann
2004: AA Bitty, Samantha, and Nellie, AND my Gotz Elizabeth
2005: Marisol, PM Felicity, AGT 21, PLUS Gotz Tess and Julia, Ann Estelle and many other non AGs
I started out getting dolls only once in awhile, but I have to say that I don't know where I'm coming to now that I have gotten 3 AGs in a year. Felicity was a very surprising gift. And I just wanted Marisol and AGT 21. I know I can't really limit doll purchases because I LOVE my dolls! I'm trying to eliminate AG Elizabeth, but it's so hard!

The dolls I bought this year are: Nellie, Marisol, AG #24, and Felicity. Up until then, I didn't have any!
I still have a list of three or four that I really want to get-although every time I go look at other pictures, more jump out at me. *grins*
I'm hoping to get at least ONE for the holidays from my husband, and to use holiday money to buy another for myself. I want Molly, Elizabeth, AG #22, Samantha and perhaps Jess. Samantha is at the bottom because I do have a PM one. I think the two on the top are Molly and Elizabeth...but Molly's clothes seem a lot less expensive the Elizabeth. I can't decide!
*grins* I shouldn't be getting another one before the holidays though.

I generally spend about $75-150 a month on dolls, but keep in mind, that's generally my fashie dolls and I buy about two outfits for Samantha every month.

I can't afford to buy any new dolls now. Well, I could have bought a new doll a month ago with a modest stack of 20s that seemed to have miraculously (seriously, how did I manage not to spend it all before then?) accumulated in my purse until I used it to pay for textbooks , but I am trying to keep my collection limited to the historical collection only, and ideally I'd like to buy one per each year or two. It's the historicals I'm mainly interested in, and I want most of them already and I wouldn't be opposed to owning all of them .

I know this is VERY old, but I found it in a search for gifted dolls because someone said I should look it up, and I totally think that the less often you get dolls and if you buy one doll at a time you wwill enjoy and look forward to getting your dolls more. They do feel more special! I always get a doll a year or mayb every 6 months at most. I really recomend doing that!

We each have our own way of doing things, including our doll spending and buying patterns. That's one of the delights of being an adult.
